Orson Welles' last home for sale

Postby atcolomb » Tue Jul 26, 2011 10:30 pm

From AOL Real Estate:

"Orson Welles' Grand Hollywood Hills Home Hits the Market.....The Hollywood Hills house that belonged to the original master of panic, actor and director Orson Welles, has come on the market at $1,285,000.
While the deep-voiced Welles' rendition of "The War of the Worlds" may have evoked fear in the hearts of all who listened on that Halloween in 1938, there is nothing frightful about this Southern Colonial home that sits on a private, gated lot surrounded by fruit trees, palms and mountain views. The three-story home was built in 1921 and has retained much of its original charm. There is also a pool and guesthouse.
Welles, who directed, co-wrote and starred in "Citizen Kane," died at age 70 in 1985. This was his last home, at least here on Earth. Sharona Alperin of Sotheby's International Realty is the listing agent".

This 1920s-era Colonial Revival near Wattles Mansion has a rather colorful history. Formerly the home of legendary actor/director Orson Welles, it's now owned by Heathers screenwriter Daniel Waters. And as mentioned in a 2008 LA Times interview with Waters, the property has also served as a shooting location for numerous porn films. Another tidbit mentioned in the Times article: Waters kept the place where Welles died, "just off the main foyer," outlined in masking tape. Sadly, if not too surprisingly, there's no sign of that memento in the listing photos (there is, however, a framed Heathers poster among the sparse furnishings). Located on a 15,000-square-foot lot, the gated property features a three-bedroom main house with hardwood floors, two fireplaces, and crown moldings, plus a separate guest house and detached garage. Asking price for the residence, which, per the listing, "needs work," is $1.285 million.
