It's quite possible that Welles didn't feel comfortable talking about a current relationship (one that was outside of an on-going marriage) to Rebecca (when was this comment made? 1970?). I think everyone knows the appeal of romanticizing something from the past whereas it's far more difficult to reveal a clear-eyed assessment of something going on in the present.
