Welles's proposed Senate bid

Postby RosJackson » Fri Feb 23, 2018 10:27 am

I can't see him winning either the Senate election against McCarthy or a later presidential election. Welles was too flighty and didn't have the right image to be President.

Welles said in the 1982 BBC interview that he didn't think anyone who had been divorced could be president, and he didn't want to run for senate unless he felt he could be president eventually. He was, however, promoted by Louis Dolivet as a possible first secretary general of the United Nations, but nothing ever came of that. Interesting irony is that, in one of his 1945 Commentary shows, Welles suggests General Dwight Eisenhower as the perfect man to head the UN. A few year later, Eisenhower became president of the US instead.

Welles would also be vulnerable to the "Hollywood liberal" stereotype in any election (although possibly not in WI, home state of the Progressives).

the "Hollywood liberal" image is what will probably prevent a *Democratic* U.S. president from Hollywood. Republican Hollywood presidential candidates would be seen as "playing against type".

I might write an alternate-history fiction piece about "Senator Welles".

Yet today Wisconsin is now the state of Scott Walker and Hillary's "Deplorables."
