The Chase

A 6 hour audiobook performance by Mr. W? Yes, please. One of Welles' several readings for Academy Shuppan, for the purpose of Japanese students learning English, circa 1985.

Thanks for posting that, Terry. Am enjoying it very much, although there are errors in the episodes' order (plus, so far, one repeat).

Oddly enough, in their bio of the writer, Sidney Sheldon, Wikipedia lists it under "Children's books." While the recording may have been designed for English learners, calling it a children's book is a stretch. Even odder, there is no Welles attribution at all, in either Sheldon's or Welles's bio -- much less a mention of this six-hour series, which Welles must have recorded just months before his death.

Thanks again for posting. How did you find out about it? I haven't had a chance to look through all of my Welles books -- it's been years since I read most of them them cover to cover -- but off the top of my head, I don't recall coming across it.

The Chase might be categorized as a Young Adult novel, considering the protagonist is 18, but it's definitely not kiddy fare (unless you agree with Welles that children should be exposed to all kinds of violence in fiction.)

The Chase is one of four Sheldon books Welles performed for Academy Shuppan. The others were Masters of the Game, Drippy the Runaway Raindrop, and Adventures of a Quarter (at least two of which featured co-readers, including Casey Kasem and Jerry Lewis, though Welles was the primary.)
