A/V Club on Welles's best radio shows (besides WOTW)
Re: A/V Club on Welles's best radio shows (besides WOTW)
Those ARE some good picks.
Personally, I'd add several other one-hour Mercurys/Campbells: TREASURE ISLAND, CHRISTMAS CAROL ('39), AMBERSONS, MONTE CRISTO, HELL ON ICE.
As far as HARRY LIME, I've been re-impressed with that series' Fifties polish and breezy Euro charm, by way of its recent weekly rebroadcast (available online, archived here):

The estimable Max Schmid has been doing the best classic radio program in NYC for decades, and the mix of shows each week is usually a treat.
Best,
-Craig

Thanks for the tip on the WBAI show, Craig. I'll check it out.
Good description of the Harry Lime shows. In the new book, Callow speaks of Welles's "effortless charisma" on the series, even though his input on many of the shows was minimal.
There are many others I would add to the list too, like REBECCA, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, OUR TOWN; of the half-hour shows, THE MOAT FARM MURDER and THE APPLE TREE, plus DEAD CANDIDATE and OPERATION MUSIC BOX from the Lime series. That's just tossing a few off offhand.
One interesting choice of theirs is PHILOMEL COTTAGE at #6, even though the copy of it they present has sound quality that is mediocre at best. I've never heard that show in good sound, so hopefully Lilly's restoration project can rectify that.
