This letter from the Trenton city manager is non-newspaper based evidence that there was indeed a panic (or something close to it) in the Trenton NJ area:

What's interesting is that the Slate article inspired a lot of discussion (over 150 comments) whereas most other articles commemorating the 75th anniversary inspired little if any.
