Re: Rosebud and the Radio
Thanks Dan, excellent article. The brilliant sound is definitely one CITIZEN KANE's most unsung aspects. I especially like this excerpt:
"The narrative's momentum is almost relentless—as in a Mercury radio play rushing to fit a complex saga into a single hour without once losing a listener's attention.
The sound of Kane's clapping hands applauding Susan Alexander's singing on the night they first meet segues into a ripple of applause from a handful of supporters at an early Kane political rally, then into a palm-pounding roar of a hallful of Kane backers on the eve of his apparent electoral victory. The sonic sequence is then reversed after Kane's political loss—the mandatory ovation at the end of Susan's operatic debut fades into Kane's pathetic, persistent solo clapping—thus bringing two chapters of Kane's story full circle."

A wonderful and elegant analysis, Mike.
I'd missed it.
