TCM Anniversary Schedule

Postby Sir Bygber Brown » Thu Apr 30, 2015 6:01 am

As seen in this announcement: http://www.wellesnet.com/turner-classic ... ns-friday/

So my question is: any word if this will reach other countries like Australia for example? We have TCM on Foxtel but its not showing up when searching the guide... :( Would have loved to see The VIP's, Journey Into Fear and Immortal Story in better fidelity. My copy is a VHS rip I think.

I agree with The Immortal Story but have yet to see THE V.I.P'S Often Orson's acting is superb in other productions as with FERRY TO HONG KONG whose humor I goet years before when I saw the initial theatrical rlease. Perhaps I may have been the only one to get what he told Peter B. in THIS IS ORSON WELLES?

Funnily enough when I was growing up in Australia they hardly ever showed Welles films, but the only ones I remember them ever showing was Journey into Fear once and Ferry to Hong Kong about a hundred times. For whatever reason, it was easy and free for them? I mean, in a perfect world can you imagine someone choosing to show Ferry to Hong Kong as the first Wellesian thing they ever shared?

The New Zealand perspective would also be interesting since Peter Jackson's pre-RING film set in the 50s (I forget the title at present) does feature Orson in his Othello make-up. FERRY would be shown as part of many British films in distribution linking recent immigrants to their homeland.

Found a copy of The V.I.P's on Foxtel, but nothing else with Welles in it aside from a short documentary on the War of the Worlds broadcast. For shame, Australia.

Don't be too hard on your homeland. Apart from a certain 300 level class, Carbondale, Illinois, home of the Big Muddy Film Festival, has done nothing to celebrate the centenary. That annual festival is supposed to emphasize independent film yet ignored a key figure who was instrumental in that movement as we now know.

We've been discussing this in the "New DCP Restoration of CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT" thread (which you've probably been reading) - I was astonished that OTHELLO was broadcast in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio; I have to assume that this was the master TCM was provided with by Castle Hill...or whoever is booking the new restoration. At least it was in HD which, sadly, both TOUCH OF EVIL and AMBERSONS were not (no surprise with the latter, but an HD version of the former has been around for a couple of years now).

I asked TCM UK on Twitter if they were going to mark the anniversary in any way, and they said no.

Typical UK! Only two Welles films shown in the new Home Arts Cinema complex last month - THE STRANGER and LADY FROM SHANGHAI - without any special celebration and A FULLER LIFE is only being shown grudgingly for two night!
