He was the managing editor at The (Springfield, Mass.) Republican, and former news director at WREB-AM radio. His writings have also appeared in Films in Review, Movie Collector’s World and Cabiria magazines, as well as several books on Massachusetts’ cultural and ethnic history.

Kelly’s views on Welles and the posthumously completed The Other Side of the Wind have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian and on BBC Radio.  He has participated in several podcasts, lectured on Welles’ career and was a keynote speaker at the Sedona International Film Festival during the Welles centenary. He has served as an advisor and researcher on various Welles-related projects.
