"Orson Welles in Hvar" - new book on making "The Deep"
Re: "Orson Welles in Hvar" - new book on making "The Deep"
This is the "lost" Orson Welles film that I'd most like to see. Has anyone gotten their hands on the book? From the Wellesnet article, I understand that the book is in two languages and that it is 150 pages long. Does that mean that it's effectively 75 pages in English and 75 in Croatian?

Each page has text in Croatian and English side-by-side. It is a very attractive book with 100 images and is the direct result of a 2015 photo exhibit of Welles at work in Hvar. It was published by the Hvar tourism board and is not a nuts and bolts chronology on the making of the film. However, one of the authors is documentarian Daniel Rafaelic (The Other Side of Welles), who is the director of the Croatian Audiovisual Center.

If Welles felt that way about it, it's too bad he didn't sell it directly to a TV station. At least a finished film would exist. There are plenty of made-for-TV movies over the years that are more enjoyable then a lot of the garbage that gets released to theaters.
Make no mistake, the authors hold The Deep in very high regard, much higher than Welles, who dismissed it in a 1982 interview as "light entertainment made for television, not for cinema... It's a bad movie. No big deal."

Thank you for answering my question about the text.
I can't believe I missed the presentation of THE DEEP at the MOMA a few years back. I only heard about it after the fact.
