"Around the World" returning to New York Stage
Re: "Around the World" returning to New York Stage
Many thanks for the info, through which I was delighted to find that the show's also receiving a handful of performances across the world in London with 3 dates left - November 3rd, 9th and 10th 2013 - before the company makes its Atlantic crossing, (at least in my imagination), via hot air balloon or other dirigible of some description, for their New York engagement. It's an odd duck of a piece and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing the Lost Musicals company present it in 2007, and will look forward to getting myself to Sadler's Well[e]s by camel, boat train, or even London Underground, to enjoy it once again.

Thanks Tadao, I didn't realize it had been presented in 2007 as well. I would think we would have had an old thread on it, but I guess that's one that slipped by us. Please give us a report on the new production if you get a chance to go.

I just got out of the penultimate night of "Around the World" in London. It was great!
I've promised Ray a proper write-up for the website, so I'll try and get down something coherent and readable on that, ahead of it opening in the US.

Re: "Around the World" returning to New York Stage
I saw the production at Sadler's Wells in London yesterday. Glad to say it exceeded my expectations. The first half in particularly was punchy as hell and very very funny. I was crying with laughter at a couple of points. Welles script contains many gems, eg. 'There's a gentleman looking for a gentleman's gentleman.'
Considering it was an 8 actors with chairs and a guy playing piano and doing sound effects, the actors did phenomenly well in playing the many different characters and locations.
If it had been written now, then it would have problems with all the cultural stereotyping that goes on, but it's very playful and full of Wellesian satirical touches. Also I'd been led to believe that the songs were substandard, and whilst not every one is exactly a classic there's some great melodies from Cole Porter.
Second half seemed less tight but ultimately highly recommended for Welles fans.
