Thanks to Timothy Jonabert Lynch for the tip on this. As Timothy says: "I was in high school in the 1970's when I became aware how brilliant Orson Welles was: Kane, Ambersons, Stranger, Shanghai and Touch of Evil were run fairly regularly on TV, back when old movies were shown frequently on local stations. At the same time, Welles showed up frequently on TV talk shows, sort of as a famous has-been. I remember watching this sketch on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show forty years ago. I had mixed emotions about it then, and BOY, do I have mixed emotions about it now"

Re: Welles on The Tonight Show
Interesting that in 1976 Welles appeared on The Tonight Show no less then twelve times, guest hosting twice, according to this Wiki page:

Contrast that with zero appearances in 1975 and before, 5 appearances in 1977 (guest hosting twice), 2 in 1978 (guest hosting once), and only one appearance from 1979 to his death. I guess by that time he had switched over to Merv Griffin.
