These serve as a striking reminder of how terrible the quality of old film footage was in the 70s and 80s. It was routine to see washed out, overexposed third or fourth generation 16mm prints of classic films on TV and even at revival houses. We're really spoiled in this age of HDTV, Blu Ray, and Turner Classic Movies.

Absolutely, although PB's reflections are still enjoyable. When I first got into Welles in the mid-80s you couldn't see decent prints of THE STRANGER, MR. ARKADIN, or THE TRIAL; only those horrid public domain releases. Several key Welles films like OTHELLO, CHIMES, and F FOR FAKE couldn't be seen at all, except occasionally at arthouses. The first time I ever saw CHIMES was at an arthouse and the picture and sound quality were awful. Now they're all available in superb additions.

Just bought the new blu of Ulmer's DETOUR at the B&N Criterion sale. A real revelation compared to what I've seen before. Still a few days left in that sale, BTW, for anyone interested.

Happy 80th birthday to Peter Bogdanovich. As Joseph McBride writes on Facebook:

"It's 50 years of filmmaking since Peter made his great debut with TARGETS. He has contributed enormously to our understanding of film history and has directed so many fine films. Last year was special with THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND (as both actor and executive producer, who never gave up) and THE GREAT BUSTER (film history through film, a labor of love like his DIRECTED BY JOHN FORD). Long may he flourish."
