After reading Roger Ryan´s comprehensive post (9 August 2005) on the many differences between the US and German(european) version of JIF, I can report that the version of the film shown by the BBC on Christmas Day 2009 as part of the Welles Christmas season at 10.50pm until midnight - IS the european version. It begins with the credit - RKO Pictures present - A Mercury Production by Orson Welles.i´m sorry it´s taken so long to post this. I did not realise that the BEEBs version was the missing European Version.
This can be excused as I have never seen the US version.I have only ever known this one.
To confirm - there is a credit for the Screenplay to "Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles" - there is no narration and the extra scene with Col. Haki and Ruth Warrick in the hotel room is in. Running time is 67m 48s PAL - which converts to over 69m NTSC. Print quality is clean and the resolution/picture definition is on a par with most RKO movies of the time.

Hey scotsman, did you DVR that one or get the iplayer download? I thought the iplayer version was a bit "digity," though in most respects it's better than the copy that made its way through the trade circles some years back. And both copies look a little overexposed, so that must just be how it looks.

Hi StoreHadji - no. I recorded it straight onto a panasonic HDD recorder and I make the DVD´s from there - I don´t use computers to watch or download, I prefer the quality of TV recorded straight to hard disc - probably a sign of age as I have been involved in analogue recordings (tapes - vcr´s ect) for almost 45 years - I prefer the way I know - I´m not terribly computer literate - I have no idea what a bit stream or a torrent is.
anyway if you want the JIF on dvd-r drop me your address and I´ll send it no charge - just postage.
