Ferry to Hong Kong (1959) "Masterpiece" Collection

Postby Sir Bygber Brown » Wed May 06, 2015 7:36 pm

From the somewhat dubiously named "Masterpiece Collection" this DVD is actually listed on the back as 4:3, with a widescreen picture. It was cheap, and the only thing with Welles in it in the entire store that I didn't have, so I grabbed it and to my horror discovered it was NOT anamorphic widescreen. So it sits stubbornly in the centre of my TV, with dreadful resolution. Clearly whoever has the rights to this has let it lapse and so now anyone can put it out, which explains why it appeared so often on Australian TV growing up.

So be warned it was probably copied from another DVD from one of your regions, and its dreadful.
You may remember me from such sites as imdb, amazon and criterionforum as Ben Cheshire.

This film is available widescreen in the USA and UK. I first saw it on theatrical release and had it on a cropped VHS copy before getting the DVD. It contains one of Orson's most marvelous comic grotesque performances, the only thing being nobody else saw the funny side of the situation. However, with a supporting role by the great Roy Chaio fluent in English and known for his contemporary Cathay studios work such as AIR HOSTESS with Grace Chang, the film is a gem. Roy later gained everlasting fame playing the Abbot in King Hu's magisterial A TOUCH OF ZEN.
