Mark Cousins talks with Wellesnet about his Cannes Festival- bound THE EYES OF ORSON WELLES documentary. It examines a lifetime worth of Welles artwork, much of it unseen before!

"Like many people, I've loved Welles films throughout my adult life, but I didn't think I'd make a film about him," Cousins told Wellesnet. "But then, I met Beatrice Welles and, through her, saw his drawings and paintings. I realized that this was a new way of seeing Welles, an unexpected way, a side door. The challenge is, as always, to avoid banality, cliches and the obvious. I wanted to try to say something new."

Looking forward to this. Right now I'm about 3/4ths of the way through his STORY OF FILM series, and am really enjoying it.
Re: Documentary on Welles artwork: 'The Eyes of Orson Welles'
I love "The Story of Film" but Cousins should hire an actor to narrate. His "uptalking" is so irritating that the project is, at times, almost unwatchable. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Uptalk

I understand what you mean, since in America we tend to associate uptalk with Valley Girls, but in Cousins' case, I've ignored it because he has a pleasant voice otherwise, plus I figured it could be some kind of Irish thing. According to Wiki it might be:
High Rising Terminal:
In any event, the programs mention a lot of films and directors around the world that I've never even heard of, or people I may have heard of, but am not familiar with.
High Rising Terminal:
In the United States, the phenomenon of HRT may be fairly recent but...serious scientific and linguistic inquiry on this topic has a much more extensive history in linguistic journals from Australia, New Zealand, and Britain where HRT seems to have been noted as early as World War II.
Although it is characterized in Britain as "Australian question intonation" (AQI) and blamed on the popularity of Australian soap operas among teenagers, HRT is also a feature of several Irish-English dialects, especially in mid-Ulster and Belfast English.

I have not seen The Eyes of Orson Welles documentary, but a retired studio exec praised Cousins' narration to me in a recent chat. I have spoken with Mark on the phone and not been bothered by his voice.

A superb review, Ray, and I love those clips. I had no idea Rochester's coat was only 14 miles from where I'm at right now (I wonder if I can get a look at it)!

Yes, excellent review, Ray. That's a strange effect of Cousins talking directly to Welles, but I like it.
One report says the first showing was close to a sell-out and the film got a very warm reception, which is good to hear.

Thanks for the kind words. I was thrilled to include those clips, which convey the feel of the documentary.
It's great that TCM and Filmstruck will be showing it and that the reviews have been positive.

Well, we now know who bought Welles' boots and socks at last year's Wellesnet auction! While I suspect Welles would have dismissed analyzing his drawings for autobiographical elements, there's no denying Cousins' enthusiasm for Welles and I look forward to seeing the documentary.

Erik Van Beuzekom, after performing his production of "Rosebud" at the Third Man Museum in Vienna, attended the world premiere of "Eyes" at Cannes and had this to say: "It was deep, sensitive, and full of insight. Got to shake Mark's hand afterwards and congratulate him. An inspiring work."
