Cannes jury looks favorably on ‘Eyes of Orson Welles’:

Eyes producer Adam Dawtrey tweeted the jury comments: '[Cousins] explores the unique universe of Orson Welles through his cinematic images and often unseen drawings. He fervently questions the representation of people and the world. He raises this essential question: how to view the time we are living in?”

Wonderful news that it is being handled by Janus, but not thrilled with having to wait until 2019!

The Eyes of Orson Welles will be screened in New York and Los Angeles before making it debut on home video as part of The Criterion Collection, according to its director.
"Delighted that my film The Eyes of Orson Welles, which premiered in Cannes, gets its USA roll out soon. In theatres in NYC and LA – thank you @JanusFilms; and on disc – thank you @Criterion," Mark Cousins tweeted today. "Will tweet dates. The world has become Wellesean."

Opens tomorrow in New York.
Nice review by the NYT:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/14/movi ... eview.html
The movie intersperses observations and speculations on Welles’s life and work with long looks at his graphic pieces. These are fascinating. Movie lovers under the impression that Welles owed his visual sense of cinema entirely to his work with the “Citizen Kane” cinematographer, Gregg Toland, will find ample correction to that here.

The Canadian schedule replaces Confidential Report with The Happy Road starring Grace Kelly. A question of rights perhaps or simply a mistake. The other Welles titles mentioned are all listed.

Did Ben Mankiewicz introduce Citizen Kane the previous times it was shown on TCM and did he address the question of the script's authorship and the controversy around it, fueled by Pauline Kael (with some help from the Mankiewicz family)?

Just finished watching the TCM broadcast and a very interesting film. Liked seeing Orson's artwork and the locations where he lived and visited.

I enjoyed it too. It's mainly for hardcore fans, but a well-done and welcome addition to the amazingly long list of documentaries on Welles, and it's on an aspect of Welles's creativity that's too little known. Because of Cousins injecting so much of his own personality into it, it actually seems to come across at times more like an essay film (a' la F FOR FAKE) then a documentary.

It is indeed essentially fodder for the Welles cognoscenti and not an introduction to his work for the uninitiated. Despite all of the interesting material, I frequently found it difficult slogging because of the second-person narration which generally sounded like bad nouveau roman from the 50s and 60s. And the Irish accent often introduced a comical character to the text, probably unintended. Still, I will give it another go if it pops up again on TCM.
