Canada
We've become scarily devoid of empathy. We also often vow to move to Canada if the other candidate wins an election. But guess what? Unless we're young, well-educated, and highly skilled, Canada doesn't want us. To them, we're the less developed country full of people trying to mooch off their healthcare.

I followed very closely the Watergate scandal in the early Seventies by watching the hearings of the Senate Select Committee on Watergate (Ervin/Baker) and of the House Judiciary Committee (Rodino), as well as witnessing the Saturday Night Massacre (Cox) announcement and, eventually, Nixon's resignation and maudlin farewell.
So this dramatization of the role played by FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt ("Deep Throat") interested me. Liam Neeson does a great job portraying Felt, and the film basically depicts its story as a conflict between Felt and Nixon's Acting Director of the FBI, Pat Gray. There are many resonances with the current conflict of the intelligence agencies with the Department of Justice/Attorney General and the White House.
Joseph McBride
Unfortunately, there was no single person who was "Deep Throat." That character did not exist in the original book manuscript by Bernstein & Woodward but was suggested by their editor, Alice Mayhew. It was a composite, a misleading fictionalized cover for Woodward's extensive intelligence contacts (who probably included but were not limited to Mark Felt). Woodward was (is?) an Office of Naval Intelligence agent. He gave General Haig the top-secret Naval Intelligence briefing every day for a year in the White House before taking his job as an unqualified newspaper reporter for the CIA front Washington Post. Watergate was a CIA operation to bring down Nixon, and Woodward was a key part of it. See, inter alia, the books SECRET AGENDA by Jim Hougan and SILENT COUP by Len Colodny and DEEP TRUTH: THE LIVES OF BOB WOODWARD AND CARL BERNSTEIN by Adrian Havill.
Kathleen Spaltro
I seem to remember that Nixon himself, in retirement, alleged that the CIA was behind his downfall. Can you explain, though, why, on the "smoking gun" audiotape that forced Nixon's resignation, Nixon is heard ordering the CIA to thwart the FBI investigation?
Joseph McBride
They were in a power struggle, and he was trying to use them.
Kathleen Spaltro
Do you mean an internal power struggle within the CIA or a power struggle between the CIA and the FBI?
Joseph McBride
Nixon and the CIA were in a power struggle. The FBI and the CIA have always had something of a power struggle, especially when Hoover was FBI director and fiercely guarded his turf.
Kathleen Spaltro
So the CIA engineered Nixon's downfall because he sought to curb the CIA? But why would he then order the CIA to interfere with the FBI investigation? It would seem to put him further in their power. Please explain.
Joseph McBride Kathleen Spaltro
The power dynamics around Nixon and the CIA were complex. He was desperate to cover up his actions in the trap they set for him and he walked into.
Kathleen Spaltro
OK, so the CIA resented Nixon's attempts to control the agency and seemingly went along with his concurrent attempts to control the FBI but engineered an exposure of his misdeeds to precipitate his downfall?

Karen Fritze
Watched the President’s address to the nation last night. What are your thoughts on shutting down the government in order to secure funding for the border wall?
Lilia Vela Trest
Its absolutely insane! His statistics were not accurate and a wall is not an effective way to secure the border.
Karen Fritze
Right? Seems exaggerated
Lilia Vela Trest Karen Fritze
the majority of illegals are here from over staying their visas not from coming illegally from the border. Also, illegal immigrants are 40% less likely to commit a violent crime than American born citizens. They are not all murders and rapists! He’s just trying to spread fear.
Ferrill Hicks
The democrats need to come around and realize we need a secure border then the government will get back to normal. As little as 3 years ago virtually ever democrat was for a wall. But they’re too stubborn to agree with Trump. It’s crazy
Lilia Vela Trest
There is more than one border to this country in addition to air and sea. An outdated wall is not going to secure us from terrorism.
Karen Fritze
Yes but can’t we keep the government going and take border security as a separate conversation? All those folks not getting paid? Seems a shame
Ferrill Hicks Karen Fritze
Reagan did that and the democrats never let it happen so the answer is no.
Ferrill Hicks Lilia Vela Trest
it’ll slow some of it down. It’s only 5 billion dollars. Obama gave our enemy 150 billion in cash. Put things into perspective

please try google. That money was THEIRS we were holding it. Possibly illegally btw. But the money was theirs, we gave them their own items. Imagine standing in line in front of me in the store, you drop a twenty and we both bend down but I pick it up first. Is it mine? Finders keepers. Can you prove it is yours?
Douglas Carpenter
This shut down is hurting the country worse that illegals...
Ferrill Hicks Douglas Carpenter
I cant quit buy into that. The illegals are costing 100’s of billions a year. The shutdown is only non essential jobs. I feel bad for those people but it’s far from really hurting the country. Besides when the go back to work they get all their back pay. It’s kind of a paid vacation.
Terri Barker Ferrill,
a lot of these federal employees who've been furloughed live paycheck to paycheck and won't be able to make their mortgages, pay their rent or pay their bills. The ones who are considered essential are continuing to work without getting paid. This is NOT A PAID VACATION!!! These people may lose everything. Have you never lived paycheck to paycheck? If not, lucky you.
Ferrill Hicks Terri Barker
I’m well aware. Obama closed it down too. Life’s not easy sometimes

The 2013 shutdown lasted 16 days.

how can a guy who was paid $200,00.00/year at age two even begin to understand about living pay check to pay check? This president is so out of touch with the American people.

Ferrill Hicks Terri Barker
all politicians on both sides are soooooo far out of touch with the American people. If the democrats would stop the hate of Trump and cut loose with the money for the wall this could end. 5 billion is a very very small fraction of the bud…See More

he wasn’t my first choice by any means. But he’s doing a pretty good job with the economy and especially job creation. If I had to pick just one thing it’s job creation. I understand that people dislike him but you have to at least like what he’s done with job creation.

What about the northern border? Oh and the eastern and western borders? Are we going to put up walls all around us?
Ferrill Hicks
The southern border is the problem. It’s easy to get into Mexico then into the US. Plus there’s the whole drug thing. That needs to be slowed down.
Len Gjerde
There are nearly a billion people in the America’s—2/3 of them south of our border. It would be silly to assume that many of the most disadvantaged of those wouldn’t migrate north if there were no impediment to doing so.
Scott Campbell Ferrill Hicks
the drugs are flowing through the check points not on the backs of illegals trying to sneak in. For drug smuggling the money would be better spent at the check points on more inspectors and better scanning technology for detecting drugs and illegals.
Ferrill Hicks Scott Campbell
I agree that a lot of it comes through check points. But a wall will stop some of it. Couple a wall with better technology and things will be A LOT better. Building a wall is very inexpensive in the big picture. Walls work. Look at Israel.

Blood pressure is very low, heart rate is very high. They are giving him medicine to improve blood pressure. Once the BP has improved they can treat heart rate. Oxgen level is good
They just scanned his kidney and will scan abdomen at 3. He can't eat anything until after the scan. Can take few sips of water.

Re: Dad's treatment
Leaving hospital now. Dad was still sleeping, so could not feed him. Chicken broth, magic cup (chocolate desert), apple sauce is on the tray in his room. Debbie please feed him if nurse has not.
Met with Dr Jonathan Cooke before we left. He was asking if we would want any invasive procedures to get his blood pressure up if needed. We told him to ask Dad when he wakes up and to ask Debbie when she comes back tonight. Also, he did not recommend any cancer treatments any time soon, as in order to do any such treatments, he needs to have better kidney function and heart and blood pressure has to be stable. Dr believes he could remain in similar condition for next few days but unlikely he would get back to condition he was two weeks ago. Kidney and heart are in bad shape.
Jeff plans to come back in the morning.

Re: Dad's treatment
Doctor talked to me and Cindy, he believes, since Dad's heart, kidneys and liver are all in bad shape, and because of his age, he probably will not leave the hospital according to his experience.
I did sign a paper so they could put in an intravenous central line for medicine to get his blood pressure up. He was content when I left at 11:15 PM. He was praising the "wonderful nurses" and they gave him a nice warm blanket. Hopefully he slept well. - Debbie

Not giving up, because I want to see if anything changes after he's stopped the chemo treatment. Dr. Richards said there's a chance he could improve, so I'm clinging to that.

Also, he started coughing when Cindy tried to feed him, so he now has a NPO (nothing by mouth) order .. I guess they're worried about him coughing food into his lungs or choking or something

Re: Dad's treatment
Jeff says the speech therapist said Dad could swallow small things, so they fed him some apple sauce this morning.
He is currently having intense burning sensation when he urinates, so they have given him a pain pill and some jelly on the groin area to relieve some of the pain.

Re: Dad's treatment
Dad is resting and appears stable. As agreed last night, no CPR and no dialysis. Not needed for now. I think the pain medicines are helping make him more comfortable, although still having pain when urinating. I discussed with nurse taking out cathader, but dad does not want that now. He's afraid they would have to put back in, which was painful. I will discuss with doctor this morning. Love Jeff
