Most Wellesian film of the year award
With the Oscars coming up this Sunday, it might be interesting to hold a Wellesnet award for "Most Wellesian" film of the year. Trouble is, I can't really think of any of the Best Picture nominees that are that Wellesian, although most of them are good films (two of them I haven't seen yet). THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURRI does have a nice balance between seriousness and black comedy that was a bit like TOUCH OF EVIL, in addition to it's dealing with police corruption, but that's about it that I can think of offhand. I guess Welles's style and technique haven't really been picked up by any of today's filmmakers, although there are a few people out there that are still willing and able to do it on both sides of the camera, like James Franco in THE DISASTER ARTIST. Of course, I hesitate to give the award to someone who is in such hot water over the sexual harassment issue, but I'm having trouble thinking of anything else.
