‘The Other Side of the Wind’ being finished in Los Angeles for Netflix
Re: ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ being finished in Los Angeles for Netflix
After The other side of the wind, Netflix is now turning to Abel Gance Napoleon.
The french cinemathéque is working on a magistral reconstruction under the direction of George Mourier since...2008! Netflix is now providing money to make the completion aviable for 2021 and Napoleon aniversary.
There are many conferences by Mourier about this reconstruction on the net -one of them in english.. The all project and many discoveries about the film and the sources is quite fascinating.
If Mourier want to work on another "life project" after Napoleon, Don Quichote could be a good choice. The labirintic structure of Napoleon multiple editings is a good preparation to Don Quichotte impossible puzzle final form. As the french cimenatheque was involved with this particular Welles unfinished film, a Mourier-cinematheque-netflix project could be a good start to dream again!

Have the 2016 BFI Blu-ray which looked good so it will be interesting to see how they both compare. I believe film preservationist Robert A Harris is working on the film too.

George Mourier make an extraordinary discoverie during the restauration. At the origin there were two differents montages of theGance Napoleon using différents screening. By the time all the restaurations on Napoleon were done using parts from the two versions without knowing it and making each time a new confusion because the original materials were cutted and combined. During 10 years, Mourier try to locate every Napoleon copies in the world, digitalise it and make a computer analyse comparaison. He was able to restaure the original montage using sometimes only few second from a copy turning then to another for just few frames and then another....to have the original Gance musical film rythme. Of course, it's something the same of the epic montage of The Other Side of the wind. There were too many new perspectives of how restaure the original lightning you have with a projection with 1930 materials sometime killed by computer scanning, and many other technical things. The job was done with colaboration of superlative ingenieurs in cinema perspective in France. Truely, the conferences on the French cinematheque website about all this story is fascinating.

Sorry for the lack of notice: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND is being shown with F FOR FAKE on Sunday, May 2, at the Netflix-operated Paris Theater in New York City. https://www.paristheaternyc.com/ (Thanks jbrooks)
Re: ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ being finished in Los Angeles for Netflix
If only it could exist a "New-York Theatre" in Paris with the same program...

Just an idea about the old indiegogo TOSTW campagne. As it is now quite sure it will be impossible to send the books and dvds long time ago promised, could it be possible to have a special NFT serie for us? A short unpublished and unknown clip from the film as a collectible NFT send to persons who give support at the time? I confess I'm very happy with my ticket of the theater premiere in Lyon, France, but such a symbolic object like special TOSTW NFT could be a nice souvenir!

The producers very much want to honor those perks but there have been unforeseen obstacles. I was in contact with someone at Netflix last week about this very subject. I explained our desire for a deluxe Blu-ray set and made what I felt was a persuasive argument. The door is not closed to a physical media release. I was told I would be kept in the loop.

Many thanks for this new information.
I confess the most interresting could be to have unseen scenes or the first longer montage of the film. Of course, it will sound probably stupid to the staff, as Orson Welles enthousiasts are always wanting for much more... but I suppose it will be a market attractive operation for them: a blueray with the film as we can see it now could be a great achievement but with new materials it could be a decisive reason to have it.
The other thing I really want to see and have is the old fragmentary Gary Graver cut...as..."a film within without the film".
Nb. Again, I'm very sorry for the bad english language.

No apologies, I understand your English. I detailed to Netflix a number of possible extras, including the 40-minute Welles edited workprint, assembly of the film-with-the-film footage, specific deleted scenes and much more.
A few weeks back, I rewatched the Gary Graver and Frank Mazzola rough assembly with an eye for scenes and dialogue contained in it, but not the finished film. Surprisingly, there was not that much extra. There are a few instances where dialogue is repeated from different angles. It is very choppy and not terribly pleasant to watch.

I cited this particular disc and other apparent bootlegs on the market in my recent conversation with Netflix about the need for a legit blu-ray release of The Other Side of the Wind. I questioned this seller, who claimed that his company was licensed by Netflix and had sold more than 2,000 copies (I know, I know). When I pressed further, he responded: "If you think it is something suspicious, do not order."
Re: ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ being finished in Los Angeles for Netflix
As I never saw the Welles 40 minutes editing and Gary Graver's one I was thinking about the same thing in my post: to have the first fragmentary editing before Netflix project resurection.
As the time pass, The other side of the wind become for me even greater than before. It's truely an increadible masterpiece. Something for cinema as Joyce Ulysse in letterature. And this film is so important for cinema history and art esthetic it need best possible sources aviable edited. Every previous editing or deleted scene is part of a "universe project" Welles was able to create. Of course, it sound quite creasy and sad the impossibility to see here in France the Hooper/Welles film published last year. I realy hope a publication too............ I know Welles was always thinking about quite short film. But I consider The other side of the wind an exception. It has the power to run a very long time. It seems the party could have many and many more scenes, as an "infinite night". Also I thing many images of cameras and cameramans shouting during the night could be much more proeminent...but impossible to know how many of them really exist, impossible to understand all the images improvisations were created by Welles for Hannaford night: are they all integrated in the final montage or remain unknown and unedited?
Many thanks for all your job for Welles art diffusion. I am quite shure your job and all Wellesnet movment had a part in the final resurection of the film.

Of course the blue ray sold on ebay is an amateur bootleg. You just have to see the disc itself to understand what you have in hand....
