Well off Elizabeth Faulkner is a kind of San Francisco version of Martha Stewart, specializing in baked goods. She opened a coffee shop, south of Market, and called it "Citizen Cake." It was so successful that she moved it to the Civic Center, where it expanded into an upscale all day restaurant. She followed that up with an epicurean dessert and cocktail bar, "Citizen Cupcake," on the third floor of the Virgin Megastore in Downtown San Francisco.
Now, a year in the making, she will open in March a full dress culinary establishment, "Orson," on Fourth Street, near the Metreon Theater Complex. The Chef will be moving from the nearby Fifth Floor Restaurant.
[Fans will remember that Todd Baesen fell in love with its watering hole, at first sight. Could there be a secret connection?] Ms. Faulkner has proudly announced that the place is named in honor of Orson Welles, and will feature "edgy California cuisine" and an elegant bar. (Here's a lady who puts her money where her mouth and heart are.)
Incidentally, I've discovered in tracking this story that the old SF Examiner (once owned by the Hearsts) maintains an archive or morgue of recent events relating to Orson Welles. The latest entry notes the resemblance of a 5 1/2 minute tracking shot in ATONEMENT to the opening of TOUCH OF EVIL.
