I just got a preview copy of the new Peter Bogdanovich version of ONE MAN BAND, which is absolutely marvelous. It is pretty much the same clips, with a few choice additons, but presented in a much more organized fashion. Bogdanovich's narration explains each of the major clips, and talks about the context of them in Welles career. One drawback is when his narration runs over onto the actual clip, which only happens once or twice, but is still annoying. Overall it's far better than the German or Aussie versions of the film.

But when is Showtime going to air it?

I tend to think Showtime won't be airing it, period, due to legal causes. It's too bad, because it deserves to be seen. I definitely need to get a copy of the new one. My bootleg of the European version is not perfect.

Where do you get such gems? And are they on dvd or just video? I'm still searching painfully for a good version of the Stranger, one that's Tony Curtis-less.

The new One Man Band was released to the press, so journalists reviewing it and so on got copies. They pop up on eBay now and again.

Showtime presents "Orson Welles: The One-Man Band" a fascinating documentary that examines Orson Welles' numerous films that have remained unseen by the public, until now. Produced and narrated by Peter Bogdanovich, it begins with a brief but comprehensive overview of the 12 feature films that saw theatrical release during Welles lifetime.
"The One Man Band," was shown in Europe in a German language version, that served as the basis for Showtime's new American version. Peter Bogdanovich has added additional footage from several of Welles unseen films, including "The Other Side of the Wind," "The Dreamers" and "Don Quixote." All the clips contained in the German version, including scenes from "The Merchant of Venice," "Moby Dick" and "The Deep" are retained, with the exception of two brief clip from "The Tailors," and a scene of Welles and the Muppets from "The Orson Welles Show." Peter Bogdanovich has added and expanded the original narration of the film, further explaining the background of each of the various film projects, as well as putting the excerpts into the overall context of Welles' career.
Orson Welles own comments on his work are also greatly expanded, with footage now included from both "Filming Othello," and "Filming The Trial." Comments and scenes with Oja Kodar, Welles longtime collaborator on most of his later projects, are also retained, which show the actress visiting the houses in France and Hollywood where she and Welles lived and worked.

Thank you so much. I'd love to see more Other Side Of The Wind but I don't get Showtime so if anyone out there has or will have a copy I'd love to get a copy. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

About the "The Four Clubman" / "London Clubs" segment of "One Man Band" (youtube):

Naturally it's a pity that the audio track is lost. I was wondering: Could the script still exist somewhere? Maybe not published, but various archives have Welles documents. Does anyone know if this was ever searched for?

I actually know someone who has some lipreading ability. But that will no doubt only get so far, and of course things could be said off camera.
