Saw the screen grabs on DVD Beaver too and it does look better then the 2 TCM releases. Still angry that this was not done the first time. Glad Orson is not around to see this....
Re: New Lady From Shanghai Restoration in 2010?
true, but at least they got it right. Oddly enough, Shanghai was one of Welles' most straightforward releases during the DVD age. It was only released once and no one really complained about it.
Re: New Lady From Shanghai Restoration in 2010?
From HighDefDigest: Mill Creek Entertainment doesn’t exactly have a very good reputation for the quality of its Blu-rays. The distributor would like to turn that around by licensing new 4k restorations of the Orson Welles noir ‘The Lady from Shanghai‘ and the Marlon Brando biker drama ‘The Wild One‘ from Sony. Reports from those who have seen ‘Lady from Shanghai’ say that the Mill Creek disc is a notable improvement over an earlier Blu-ray from TCM. Who would have suspected that?
Re: New Lady From Shanghai Restoration in 2010?
I just learned of a cheap 2-DVD set from Mill Creek Entertainment: Hollywood Legends: Orson Welles. It contains The Lady From Shanghai, The Stranger, David and Goliath and The Southern Star.It was released 3.17.2015, the same day as the standalone TLFS DVD.

Tonight's showing of "Lady from Shanghai" on TCMHD will be an HD version of film -- not just an upscaled SD version.

Disappointingly, the preceding broadcast of TOUCH OF EVIL was just upscaled SD.

The same feeling when they broadcast Ambersons...a better looking print could have been used.

Jonathon Rosenbaum on TCM's 2014 DVD release:

A punishing illustration of the maxim that history is written by its victors rather than its victims, the TCM Vault Collection’s typically scattershot and somewhat absent-minded dual-format edition of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) focuses mainly on kitschy publicity materials from Columbia, a poorly researched podcast, and a previously used audio commentary by Peter Bogdanovich (not one of his best) that chiefly relies on reading aloud portions of This is Orson Welles before belatedly and incompletely (albeit tactfully) correcting some of Welles’ misstatements in it. Furthermore, and typically for TCM Vault releases, no subtitles of any kind are included. The most factually reliable material comes in an onscreen essay that the lazier film buffs probably won’t bother with, but to get an inkling of what the 155-minute rough cut consisted of, you’ll have to turn to the final chapter of the second edition of James Naremore’s irreplaceable The Magic World of Orson Welles.

Website Blu-ray.com has news on a new British 4K Blu-ray release of Lady From Shanghai on April 24th. Below are the details:
Upcoming Powerhouse Films Blu-ray Releases
British label Indicator/Powerhouse Films will add three new titles to its Blu-ray catalog in April: Orson Welles' The Lady From Shanghai, Paul Schrader's Hardcore, and Blake Edwards' Experiment in Terror.
The Lady from Shanghai
Synopsis: Baffling murders, fascinating plot twists and remarkable camera work all contribute to this spellbinding, time-honored film noir written and directed by and starring Orson Welles. Hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Rita Hayworth, Welles plays an innocent man drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue and murder.
The subject of great controversy and scandal upon its initial release, The Lady From Shanghai shocked 1948 audiences by presenting Hayworth with her flaming red hair cut short and dyed champagne blonde. Fifty years later, The Lady From Shanghai is considered vintage Welles, his famous hall of mirrors climax hailed as one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

The continued use of this promotional line is becoming simply bizarre. Originally written as a press release and a liner note for the initial Sony DVD release in 2000, the same verbiage has been used to herald every home video edition of the film since. It's now been nearly seventy years since the film was first released - we may not like it, but time marches on inexorably!
Still, happy to see a new edition with bonus features.

DVDBEAVER has a new review of the UK blu-ray release by Indicator. Gary says this new release is the best looking so far with a new 2017 interview with Simon Callow and is region free. I might get it when it's on sale but to have a third blu-ray of the movie makes me hold on to my wallet.
