I thought for a moment this was in L.A. in a place I had never heard of...but I gues it is in Maryland? The directions on the AFI's website doesn't say....Too bad I would have gone.

Glowing review of the new Chimes restoration, from the Leonard Lopate show this morning (with guests Beatrice Welles and Peter Becker from Janus films):

Lopate: "This is such a gorgeous print. The black and white is just stunning."

Beatrice: "It's so thrilling...Peter has done miracles with it."

I caught the screening last night at Film Forum. The restoration was beautiful. I've seen a very good print of it before and there is at least one great DVD transfer already, so the improvement is more marginal than some other restorations. But this surely is the best the film has ever looked. It's nearly perfect. Great detail. Great contrast. It's not overly bright -- as it was when shown on TCM last May. The soundtrack is very clear as well. A few shots here and there have slightly soft focus or slightly imperfect exposure, but I expect those minor imperfections stem from the original production.

Beatrice Welles introduced the screening and did a Q and A afterword. She was lively and charming and gracious. She was very excited to see "Chimes" finally getting a decent American release and her enthusiasm was infectious. She even brought along her original script from the production and passed it around the audience.

I think Orson would be very happy to see his great film get a second chance for a limited but wide American release to great reviews and respect it deserves. I will see it for sure when it comes to Chicago.
