A Final Cut For Orson

‘Final Cut for Orson’ invaluable in appreciating ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ completion:

From Facebook:
JK: I loved the film, but watching this doc gave me a whole new appreciation for what it took to complete it. I was particularly intrigued by the intersection of the digital and the analogue and how it was digital technology that made it feasible.

A terrific documentary and it also makes a great interlude between They'll Love Me and Wind. Covers the years following where the Neville doc left off, which was basically Orson's death. However, one thing it glosses over (tactfully, I suppose) is the incredible amount of crap they had to go through to get all the opposing camps to sign. That would have made the sense of achievement and tenacity even more impressive. For the missing parts of the legal wrangling story not told in the two documentaries, see Josh Karp's book ORSON WELLES'S LAST MOVIE and Joseph McBride's WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ORSON WELLES?. Both great books, but neither covers the most recent years since the first announcement back in October in 2014. For all the waiting and negotiating that had to be endured just since 2015, we have it detailed here at Wellesnet.

I too loved learning more about the nuts and bolts of completing the film. However, the only reason I found the link to it was that Ray posted it. When I search for the movie on Netflix, I could never find it. Sounds like other people were having that issue as well. I wonder why that is.

A FINAL CUT FOR ORSON was described to me and to fellow colleagues in the media somewhat dismissively as a "featurette" by folks at Netflix.
With a completed Orson Welles movie and a companion documentary by Oscar winner Morgan Neville to promote, A FINAL CUT FOR ORSON was overlooked and unappreciated by the streaming giant. (They pulled it from the Venice lineuo, though it was screened at Telluride.)
Director Ryan Suffern, who oversees many of the documentaries produced by Kennedy Marshall, did an incredible job capturing the post-production work in 38 minutes.
Among the highpoints of the past year for me -- and there were many -- was when Bob Murawski introduced me and Joseph McBride to Ryan at NYFF.

Ray, that's a great story. Thanks for sharing it. Like you, I think that A Final Cut for Orson is indispensable viewing. I don't think I would have seen it if you had not shared the link.

One of my favorite parts of Final Cut is the Video Gorillas segment, when they show how much critical work was actually done in someone's garage.

One person on Wellesnet Facebook noted that he liked FINAL CUT FOR ORSON a lot better then THEY'LL LOVE ME WHEN I'M DEAD. i've heard that from others as well, probably because Final Cut is less ambivalent towards Welles himself.
