At cinephiliabeyond.org there's a colour photo of Welles and the crew setting up for the crane shot at the beginning of the film; it's the only colour shot of the TOE production I've ever seen. The photographer is Sherman Clark, a Universal staff photographer who took some if not all of the black and white production shots of TOE as well. Does anyone know if there are other colour shots, or the source of this shot? (I've tried, but failed, to post this question on cinephiliabeyond.org.

Re: Sherman Clark Universal Staff photographer
I always wondered why there weren't publicity
stills of the opening shot being filmed. Maybe
because in those days, studios were still
trying to keep the machinery secret. I wonder
if more exist in the studio files.

Is that Welles, in the dark jacket and open-collar white shirt, behind the car on the right? It looks like him from 20 years before. If it is . . . what a masterful transformation into Hank Quinlan!

Yep, that's Welles, dressed in his own clothes since he wouldn't be required to be in costume or make-up as Quinlan that day.
Re: Sherman Clark Universal Staff photographer
Well, he doesn't look like Quinlan. But he doesn't look like Orson from the late Thirties, either.
It's from a distance, and the focus is soft. But look close, and give it some time: the man in that dark jacket has a different hairline, is fuller of face, and is much more portly, than when he was Brutus.
Take good care and be well,

Very true, Wich2. I suppose it was the shock of seeing him looking so utterly un-Quinlan-like (and recalling the story of Welles rushing to a party, made up as Hank, and being bemused by people telling him how wonderful he looked -- the implication being that he wasn't in costume) that made me unconsciously overemphasize the striking differences and overlook the (now very obvious) signs you mention.
Thank you for your kind wishes. You, too, take good care, and be well.

Great story, NF!
(Reminds me of the time after Oscar Wilde's WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE way back at NYU, when a friend told me, "And you were SO handsome... on stage!")

TELL me about it, Wich2 / Craig. It's like being told: "You were SO cute / smart / talented . . ." and having the observation end there.
