Fathom Events and TCM Big Screen Classics will show in selected theaters Citizen Kane for it's 80th anniversary on September 19th. I will be there if it is shown in the Chicago area.

Only been to one of these--"North By Northwest"--and it looked like a digital screening, no more special than my bluray but on a big screen and somewhat grainy. Are they really worth it?

- 1. Depends on the size of the house. I also saw NORTHWEST, in a smallish theater, and Blu-ray was just fine.
- 2. I believe Fathom is a step up, using UHD.
- 3. An appreciative Audience is always a nice way to share a movie.

Viewed Gone With The Wind back in 2019 in the theater and the image looked a little darker and less colorful as compared to the Blu-ray. Happy i saw it in the theater and if i remember correctly every seat was taken.

I saw it in a packed theatre in the 70's during a re-release. Suburban audience, not art house.
Never forget the gasp at Clark Gable's first appearance. Movies . . .

Alas, in that era likely the bastardized version ~

When i viewed Citizen Kane for the first time in a theater it was about twenty years ago in one of those multi-plex ones and they shown it widescreen and not the 1:33 aspect ratio. I did complain to the manager afterwards.

Same situation - Welles' head was cropped in several scenes! I complained as well, but was told the multi-plex just didn't have the correct projection lens for 1.33:1 (so why was it booked and why did the theater charge full price?)
The advantage of seeing Kane in its 80th Anniversary screenings is the (digital) image should look good if based on the same restoration used for the Blu-ray. I've complained before on these pages about the 50th Anniversary screenings - sure, it was a 35mm print being screened, but the murky image with terrible contrast did Toland's photography no favors. I was afraid the film would never look better (although the first VHS release in 1985 was actually better than the one released in 1991 based on the 50th Anniversary prints).

The latest CINEVERSARY podcast marks the 80th anniversary of "Citizen Kane" with interviews with Chicago Tribune critic Michael Phillips, TCM senior director of original programming Scott McGee, and film historian Joseph McBride. Check it out at

Great podcast and very informative. I hope more folks will see the film when it comes out in the theaters later this year.

You can now pre-order tickets for Kane's release in the theaters on September 19 & 22. My drive to the nearest theater is about a half hour.
