The Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Bruno Fontaine, performed music from Mr. Arkadin earlier this month.
Maestro Bruno Fontaine and the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra brought the music of the Orson Welles’ film Mr. Arkadin (aka Confidential Report) to life at a recent performance in Paris.
Fontaine, an arranger and composer in his own right, has a passion — and ear — for lost movie scores, often the result of the negligence on the part of publishers or even the composers.
He uncovered a piano score and orchestrated sketches for Mr. Arkadin in the archives of the 1955 film’s composer Paul Misraki.
Fontaine transformed his musical find into an arrangement for orchestra.
Misraki’s score was performed on January 11, 2019 live from the Auditorium of the Maison de la Radio as part of the program Soundtracks: From Tati to Godard.
The concert was broadcast live on France Musique and a video appears below.
Welles filmed his original screenplay throughout Europe in 1954 with scenes shot in London, Munich, Paris, the French Riviera, the Château de Chillon in Switzerland and several Spanish locations. The movie co-starred Welles’ third wife, Italian countess Paola Mori.
Producer Louis Dolivet released several edits of the film, none of which were approved by Welles.
