The adjective “Wellesian” has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary, along with several other cinematic terms.
“Wellesian” was added today to the venerable Oxford English Dictionary, along with a slew of other cinematic terms.
Oxford English Dictionary defines Wellesian, an adjective, as: “Of or relating to Orson Welles; resembling or characteristic of his works.Welles is particularly noted for his striking early successes in the fields of theatre, radio, and film, the creative control he exerted as producer, writer, director, and actor, and his later struggles with a variety of unfinished projects.”
The addition comes as Welles infamous radio broadcast, The War of the Worlds, marks its 80th anniversary on October 30, and the posthumous release of his The Other Side of the Wind debuts on Netflix on November 2.
In addition to Wellesian, Oxford English Dictionary added the following cinematic terms related to works of filmmakers: Fordian, Kubrickian, Capraesque, Spielbergian, Altmanesque, Hawksian and Tarantinoesque.
The Oxford English Dictionary, founded more than 150 years ago, is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words— past and present—from across the English-speaking world.
